“No,” Zee said.

“Really? You never told her?”

“To be honest, no. We got together and then broke up so fast that I barely had time to have a relationship to talk about.”

“Well, that’s true. But still, keeping secrets from your mother is never good.”

“It’s not a secret,” Zee said. “It’s just news that wasn’t worth sharing. Anyway, now Archie and I are just friends. More important are things like my work on the paper and stuff… Oh! I finished that profile of you, Izzy. Ella said it was great.”

“Ooh, thanks, I can’t wait to read it!” Izzy said.

“C’mon, let me show you upstairs,” Zee said, taking the girls up to the second floor, where her parents’, the twins’, and Camilla’s bedrooms were, then kept going toward the stairs to the third floor where her bedroom was.

She opened the door. “This is it. My room,” Zee said.

The room was tidy, Zee’s bed tightly made with smooth bedding. A blue bean bag chair sat underneath the window, perfectly fluffed. Her denim jacket had been carefully draped over her desk chair, and her picture frames sparkled on top of the desk. It was as if Camilla had been in to tidy. That thought shook Zee. Does she go through my stuff when I’m not here?

“Cool,” Izzy said as she and Jameela walked in and looked around. “California shabby chic! Is this your memorabilia from your band in California?”

“Yeah, that’s us in California,” Zee said, looking over Izzy’s shoulder at a photo frame she held. Zee had played with Chloe and Ally in a band called The Beans back in California. Zee thought wistfully about her good friends and the fun they had as she looked at the photo.

“That’s awesome!” Izzy picked up a framed photo of The Beans taken at the television studios of KTLA-TV, right before Zee left for England. “Is this from a TV show?”

Zee smiled. “Oh yeah, we were on a show called Good Morning L.A. there.”

Jameela looked around the room. “It’s all quite… it’s quite you.”

“Thanks, Jameela. I’m not sure what that means, but okay. Anyway,” Zee said. “It looks like we can all spend the night either here or in the faux campfire tent situation my mom set up on the freezing cold patio. Whichever you like.”

“I actually wouldn’t mind a little campout,” Izzy said as she looked at more photos on Zee’s desk. “Besides, like she said, it’s not that cold out, and with the firepit I bet we’ll be cozy.”

“Sleeping out under the stars in Notting Hill,” Jameela said with a sigh. “A first for everything.”

“If you really want to,” Zee said with a shrug. “My mom would be thrilled. Don’t be surprised if she hovers over us in the middle of the night to take photos of us sleeping for her feed.”

The girls went back downstairs where Camilla was helping Mrs. Carmichael assemble dinner. As they bustled around the kitchen, Mr. Carmichael came in. “Wow, a house full of the most talented students I know,” he said.
